Hello folk,I'll realy appreciate if someone have opinion about the PERFECT PHOTO SUITE softwares. I use the PPS 8.5 and slowly learn it and get better results with time.
Now the PPS 9 is announced and I wonder if it's worth upgrading. I'm currently using it as a standalone software, but it could be used also as plugin in PS and LR. I don't really know if I need to add LR for postprocessing, what does it really add for a beginner in PP? I know that's more than one question at once, please be tolerant. I would say that if you only have one program for post production then Lightroom is a better choice than Perfect Photo Suite.I do about 95% of my post production work (RAW files mostly but some JPG from P&S cameras) in LR and use PPS or Photoshop to finish the ones that need further work. In effect PPS and PS are nice to have add-ons to Lightroom.Getting started with LR does take some preplanning so that you start out with a good hard drive file storage scheme and Master Catalog scheme.
There are different ways to set up both schemes so you need to think and plan in advance to be sure the schemes you settle on are good for you.One important thing to note is that LR does NOT copy or move your files on disk, all it does is keep a database of where those files are stored, which is why it is so important to have your hard drive storage scheme worked out in advance.Once you get your storage and catalog schemes worked out then you are ready to start importing images into your catalog and doing post production. As good a way to start as any other is just to start at the top of the Develop Module Basic panel and work your way down the sliders. As you learn you will learn when to change the order of how you apply the sliders and develop your own workflow.When you reach the limit of what you can do efficiently in LR that is the time to send/export the image to an add-on program like PPS or to Photoshop (mainly for lots of retouching, extractions, layers, and masks).If you are interested in trying LR then ask for a list of tutorials to guide you before you sign up for the 30 day free trial of LR. If you find you like LR you can always buy it or sign up for CC (LR and Photoshop) after the 30 day free trial. I don't see PPS as a substitute for LR, but rather as a supplement.

There is no question that PPS is a much more versatile and powerful editing program. However, I am uncertain of its raw converting prowess, as I have never put it to the test. For those who are not into serious photo editing, LR is probably enough. For those who are, secondary editors are a necessity, IMO.OnOne is very active and aggressive in improving its products, and I expect v9 to have some major advances. I will certainly be upgrading, as it is my main editing program following basic raw conversion in Photo Ninja.RobPPS is not a RAW converter in the way that Lightroom and other programs are. If you open a RAW it will render it to a psd, there aren't any controls to use prior to conversion. The problem with that is if highlights are blown out they will be rendered that way.Having said that it is a great plugin to give extra features after basic RAW adjustments. I use it in Standalone mode exporting from C1 and choosing open with PPS 8 and I am looking forward to the upgrade.

I finally will go to PPS9, I saw some very powerful new tools, including some for changing skies or backgrounds very efficiently (if it keeps its promises). For RAW files I'll use another software, now I begun to learn Rawtherapee, it looks not easy but strong.Here a recent PP with PPS8.5:Old door in a mountain village, worked with PPS8.5 (Perfect Enhance + B&W, Perfect Effect module). Photo Ninja is much simpler and delivers superior IQ to anything else I have used or tested. So, if you're looking for a new raw convertor, PN is one you might consider.Rob. That is true, I like LR too and use it as a basis.
However - if you are after more creative stuff (filters, layers), LR is not your tool of choise, you end-up using PS or some filters anyway (onOne, Nik, Topaz).The good thing about the onOne PPS is, that it actually can work as a stand-alone tool too. It has browse module and latest version 9 added photo rating, filtering, as well as Smart Layers, which keep your work on effect layers virtual, just like LR does.
