It's usually suggets to remove all external devices prior to upgrading, then plug the devices back in one at a time to let Windows 7 discover the device and see if it can install a driver for it. We also need to get terms definded here.
You say downloading - to me that means exactly that, just downloading - which doesn't do anything but put it on the hard drive ready for use. What does that mean to you? Does that mean installing the driver? I'm old too (soon to turn 61 - retired law enforcement, now in IT 14 yrs), so its takes a lot of hair pulling sometimes (I've got none left, what I do have I cut very short to prevent bleeding to death):) Ok, I just looked at the Lexmark web site and see there are no Windows 7 drivers for that printer (seems to be an old printer). So lets install the Windows XP driver in compatability mode.

I ran into this issue last week and solved it with a helpful post that the Lexmark E-210 and the Samsung ML-1210 use the same printer driver. Samsung has a Windows 7 driver! What I did was to install the 9MB ML-1210 driver - you don'tneed any of their software so just get the smallest driver file.
(install selecting: without connecting USB cable). That will get the driver on your PC. Then install the Lexmark E220. Change the E-220 port to USB. Then go into drivers and select theSamsung ML-1200 series.
Last, change the name of the E-220 to E-210. Works perfectly via USB. You can also safely delete the samsung printer from the device list.
