Boot

I bet i cant get a faster response or resolution in any other forum.much appreciated. I think i need to remove default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS but not sure, since nothing here says windows7.this the same as startup & recovery under system properties. You are right being not sure:). Do not touch the boot.ini file and do not play with Msconfig in XP! The problem arose because Win7 replaced the XP boot manager (ntldr) with its own (bootmgr).

And uninstallation of Win7 and formatting Win7 partition has not restored the boot manager of XP. Or, rather, ntldr remains intact on XP partition, but the boot sector continues to launch bootmgr instead of ntldr during the boot. You have to choices now. 1) The first one is to restore XP's bootsector, which will launch ntldr while booting (instead of bootmgr). This can be done by running the command bootsect.exe /NT52 C: (supposing that boot partition is C.

One can as well to use 'ALL' instead of C: if You are not sure which of partitions is boot). The program bootsect.exe can be started from the folder 'boot' of the Win7 installation DVD. 2) You can as an alternative to download, install and start the program EasyBCD. Just press the button 'Add/Remove entries', click on XP entry in the list of boot menu options and press the red button 'Delete'. This method will keep the boot manager of Win7 to boot XP, but will delete the non-existent for now Win7 menu entry. In Windows XP, right-click MY COMPUTER and select:Properties Advanced Startup and Recovery Settings EditCAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this: boot loader timeout=10 operating systems multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS='Windows XP Media Center Edition' /noexecute=optin /fastdetect C:CMDCONSBOOTSECT.DAT='Microsoft Windows Recovery Console' /cmdconsCarey Frisch This method will not remove Win7 entry from Win7 boot menu (appearing during the boot first)! The only possible consequence of deleting of the line declaring just Windows XP as the default OS (in secondary, XP's, boot menu) would be the default choice of Windows Recovery Console instead of XP as default.

Microsoft

But, most probably, XP will remain default. If there is no explicit declaration of default OS, XP bootloader probably will choose the first in the list as such. Thank u guys, It worked. I searched the internet extensively and tried several different solutions.

I was able to remove Windows 7 after taking ownership of the files. I tried fixmbr from my OS disk, but still had the screen at boot giving me the choice of Windows 7 or an earlier operating system.

By checking the dates of the files in the root directory, I was able to guess at the files that were placed there during the installation of Windows 7. I deleted boot.bak and bootsect.bak from the XP root directory and rebooted.

It still didn't work. Decided to rename bootmgr to bootmgr.old just in case it might be needed. After a reboot-Sucess! I hope this works for others like me that seemed to find nothing but dead ends.
